FREQUENTLY ASKED QEUSTIONS

What’s the Difference Between Prequalification and Pre-Approval?

Prequalification is the first step in the mortgage process. A lender will review your credit and ask for basic information about your income, assets, and debts. This gives you a general idea of how much you might be able to borrow, but it’s not a guarantee. Prequalification is helpful for setting a price range, but it’s not as strong as a pre-approval when making an offer.

Pre-approval goes a step further. Your lender will verify your income, assets, and credit by reviewing documentation you provide. This results in a more accurate estimate of your loan amount and strengthens your offer when shopping for a home. It shows sellers you’re a serious and qualified buyer.

Will I be required to close my credit card accounts with a debt consolidation refinance?

No, you won’t be required to close your credit card accounts. Lenders don’t ask for that as part of the refinance process. In fact, it’s usually not recommended to close them, since doing so can negatively affect your credit score by reducing your available credit and impacting your credit history. The only exception might be a HELOC or second mortgage that can’t be subordinated, but which does not apply to credit cards.

Will I still own my home with a Reverse Mortgage?

Yes, you remain the homeowner and retain the title. You’re just borrowing against your equity.
